Exoskeletal predator defenses of juvenile California spiny lobsters (Panulirus interruptus) are affected by fluctuating ocean acidification-like conditions

چکیده

Spiny lobsters rely on multiple biomineralized exoskeletal predator defenses that may be sensitive to ocean acidification (OA). Compromised mechanical integrity of these defensive structures tilt predator-prey outcomes, leading increased mortality in the lobsters’ environment. Here, we tested effects OA-like conditions selected juvenile California spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus . Young reside kelp forests with dynamic carbonate chemistry due local metabolism and photosynthesis as well seasonal upwelling, yielding daily fluctuations pH. Lobsters were exposed a series stable diurnally fluctuating reduced pH for three months (ambient pH/stable, 7.97; pH/stable 7.67; low fluctuations, 7.67 ± 0.05; high 0.10), after which examined intermolt composition (Ca Mg content), ultrastructure (cuticle layer thickness), properties (hardness stiffness) defenses. Cuticle was consistently robust conditions, while mineralization variable. Notably, carapace less mineralized under both treatments but no effect material properties, rostral horn had lower hardness reduced/high without corresponding difference mineralization. Antennal flexural stiffness reduced, compared treatment not correlated changes cuticle structure or These results demonstrate complex relationship between exoskeleton changing chemistry, can induce responses observed often used OA research. Furthermore, this study shows some lobster are responsive even during period, ways potentially increase susceptibility predation among critical life stage.

Neural basis of teeth coordination during gastric mill rhythms in spiny lobsters, Panulirus interruptus.

Motoneurones that drive the closing of the lateral teeth during gastric mill rhythms in spiny lobsters start firing before the motoneurones that drive the medial tooth powerstroke. This has the expected behavioural interpretation that the lateral teeth must close on a food particle before the medial tooth is pulled across it. The neural basis of the teeth coordination was examined. Experiments ...

Feeding ecology of juvenile spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus, on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico

Many aspects of the early life history of the red lobster Panulirus interruptus are little known, including the relationship between habitat structure, food resource availability, and nutrition of juveniles. We investigated the spatial and temporal differences in food intake, diet composition, and nutritional condition of juveniles at two sites along the Pacific coast of the Baja California Pen...

The acoustic mechanics of stick slip friction in the California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus).

The dynamic interplay between static and sliding friction is fundamental to many animal movements. One interesting example of stick-slip friction is found in the sound-producing apparatus of many spiny lobster species (Palinuridae). The acoustic movements of the spiny lobster's plectrum over the file are generated by stick-slip friction between the two surfaces. We examined the microscopic anat...

Behavioral responses to variable predation risk in the California spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus

Shelter dwelling and gregariousness are behavioral strategies used by benthic marine organisms to reduce the risk of predator-induced mortality. For spiny lobsters, the relative and synergistic success of shelter dwelling and aggregation in reducing mortality may vary with the perceived risk of predation as well as the availability and size distribution of conspecifics and shelters. We tested h...
